Obituary for Viola Hiatt

Viola Margaret Hiatt age 94 of Sedalia died on Wednesday, July 26, 2017 at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center. She was born on December 6, 1922 in Independence, Missouri daughter of Ernest and Emma L. Curtis Brown. On December 3, 1942 in Lincoln, Nebraska she married William O. Hiatt, Jr. and he preceded her in death on June 12, 2000. Viola graduated from William Chrisman High School in Independence, Missouri. She worked at the Forum Cafeteria in Kansas City and then for the Lake City Army Ammunition Plant in Independence. She was a Housewife, Mom and Grandmother. A lifelong member of Community Of Christ Church in Sedalia, where she taught Sunday School. Viola and her family made Rabbits, Butterflies and Angels which they sold to help with the building fund for the church. She was a den mother and adult leader in the Boy's Scouts Of America. Viola volunteered in the past at Washington Elementary School and served as P.T.O. president. She also read books to the children at Horace Mann School. Viola was a member of the American Red Cross where she served for forty-five years and volunteered a total of 25,916 hours. She received the Ida Hoffman volunteer award and the Presidential Lifetime Recipient Award from the President of the United States.She enjoyed two step dancing, traveling, sewing and crocheting. She was totally dedicated to her community and received many awards. Viola was a inspiration and an amazing reminder of living life to its fullest. She is survived by one daughter; Barbara Turner (Melvin "Butch") of Sedalia, one son; William Ernest Hiatt (Teresa) of Mora, Missouri, one sister-in-law; Vivian Brown of Independence, six grandchildren; Melissa Turner, Ann Harrell (Todd), Charles Turner (Stacey), Monte Hiatt, Katherine Paul (Robby) and Loren Hiatt, thirteen great grandchildren; Whitney Benscoter (Nick), Brooke Turner, Max Harrell, Sam Harrell, Chelsea Turner, Lily Turner, Oliva Turner, Ben Harrell, Jeannie Blackmore, Raiden Hiatt, Tyler Hiatt, Colby Hiatt, Emery Paul and Kate Paul, one great great grandson; Leland Alexander and several nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by two brothers; Richard E. Brown and Kenneth Brown, two sisters; Alice Nelson and Helen Michaels. Funeral service will be at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, August 1, 2017 at Community Of Christ Church at 2000 South Ingram Ave. Sedalia, Missouri with Ministers Greg Resch and Mary Jo Sartin officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be grandsons and honorary pallbearers will be granddaughters. The family will receive friends from 6:00 P.M. until 7:30 P.M. Monday at Ewing-Schutte-Semler Funeral Home. Friends may call after 12:00 Noon on Monday, July 31, 2017 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be given to Community Of Christ Church or American Red Cross.
